185 babies die in a maternity hospital in Santiago; nurses mobilize in complaint.

SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS.- Maternity Nurses Doña René Klang of the Hospital Presidente Estrella Ureña, demanded from the health authorities a response for the death of 185 children due to infections in that hospital center so far this year. They affirm deaths have been a product of the inhuman conditions in which the physical plant of said health center is located.

These health care professionals demanded with a demonstration the immediate rejuvenation of the hospital’s maternity, located between the avenues 27 de Febrero and General Imbert, to the west of this city. Carrying large banners and shouting some protest slogans, the nurses paralyzed vehicular traffic to make their complaints felt.
They said that their struggle is for a dignified motherhood for Santiago and the North region, since the conditions in which they find themselves are not appropriate to provide a quality health service for the benefit of babies.

They criticized President Danilo Medina, the Ministry of Health and other pertinent institutions, not to begin remodeling, conditioning and adequate equipment, despite having announced improvements to this campus months ago.

The nurses also demand from the health authorities, a sterilization unit, which is without fans or air conditioning. To this list is added the repair of the area of neurology, as well as the solution of other problems that directly affect newborns.
